High-Pressure liquid chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (HPLC-MS), Gas Chromatograph with Flame-Ionization Detection (GC-FID)
The SIIAF is a Faculty of Science (FCUL) infrastructure specialized in providing analytical services and supporting research that uses several methodologies for Stable Isotope Mass Spectrometry. It is also equipped to carry out Gas Chromatography with Flame-Ionization Detection (GC-FID), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis and to determine organic and inorganic carbon in water.
In the area of stable isotope analysis, SIIAF is equipped to carry out analyses of the isotopes of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen and sulphur in organic matrices, soils, waters, and atmospheric air. These analytical services are routinely provided, in the form of service provision, with a varying degree of collaboration with the requesting researchers regarding training for sample preparation as well as data interpretation.
In support of the research carried out at FCUL and at national and foreign universities, it often develops partnerships in which it advises on the collection and preparation of samples for stable isotope analysis. SIIAF provides academic support, namely through visits of demonstration of analytical techniques, as well as individual support for the development of works by MSc and PhD students.
In addition, it participates in training actions at an international level: thematic workshops – Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (CE3C) Advanced Courses.
SIIAF staff is specialized in the abovementioned analytical areas and participate in the level of analytical consultancy and the training of students and researchers in the areas of stable isotopes.
