The animal facility is dedicated to the maintenance of both laboratory and wild animals.
The facility has conditions to independently house a wide range of animals such as laboratory mice, but also wild small mammals, crayfishes, fishes, amphibians, and reptiles.
The aim of the facility is to support scientific projects associated with animal experimentation and to ensure high animal welfare standards throughout the development of such projects by encouraging the application of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) and high-quality animal research.
The facility also participates in educational activities and promotes practices that lead to better animal use, maintaining high levels of animal welfare.
It is licensed by the National authority, the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary (DGAV). All experimental protocols conducted in the Animal Facility are previously submitted to the Animal Welfare Body (ORBEA) at the Faculty of Sciences of ULisboa for further approval by DGAV, the competent national authority responsible for implementing the legislation for the protection of animals for scientific purposes.
