Summer School: Mountains in a changing world

The aim of this program is to understand why mountains are defined as complex systems and why they are vulnerable to change, to identify the threats they are facing, describe the potential effects of these changes, explore key remediation and mitigation strategies, and provide crucial trajectories for mountains confronting environmental transformations. MCW is mixing multidisciplinary lectures (from mountain building/environment, water management, snow, glaciers and avalanches to botanics, …) and activities on campus and field trips to directly observe the numerous effects of climate change on the Alps environment. (including the botanical garden of Lautaret). In 2026, a second week will be proposed dealing with the societal and economic challenges posed by the rapid changes currently taking place in mountain environment.
